| 人们之所以拜关公，除了其忠义含义之外，主要还是他的尚武，即其勇武之气。这一点和军政业以及武师崇拜关羽相类似。中国戏曲舞台上的关公形象几乎是全能战神的象征，其剧场感召力不宜低估。清军和太平天国作战时曾经使用关帝显灵仪式，但清军和义和团闹摩擦之时，竟未使用关帝之灵，原因就在于清军和义和团共同认可关公的战神地位。可见，义和团崇拜关公，关键有三点：一是关公的忠义，二是关公的神勇，三是清军未曾以关公之神灵镇压过义和团。义和团崇拜关公的原由也在这里，因此，团民在回忆关公附体时充满了虔诚和敬畏之情。可见，义和团对关公的感情多充斥有亲和力。即便具有公告形式的义和团坛谕，拜关公铜像的主题也时常成为主体内涵。当然，关公因为忠勇兼备，便获得了官方、民众和秘密会党三者的敬重，而会党拜关公，则主要取其忠义气节。明清时期的天地会、三合会、哥老会、青洪帮、四川袍哥，都拜关公。如三合会中，供奉着很多神灵，但关公位于首要，享受开山祖师的待遇。三合会入会，又称作戏或放马，举行仪式这天，会员都要到场，称作看戏。入会上都要强调关公的忠义精神。义和团作为晚清会党的一派支脉，自然包容了拜关公的传统。正因为关公崇拜弥漫朝野，义和团运动时期，端王、刚毅尚且受此风尚影响而信奉关公，亦可知拜关公已成广泛的风尚，几融入包括义和团在内的晚清基本民众的集体无意识当中。 Besides the meaning of loyalty and righteousness, the reason why people worship Guan Gong is mainly his martial worship, that is, his courage.
