虎牢关三义庙，又称关帝庙，位于河南省荥阳市市区西北部16公里的汜水镇境内。四海内外，关帝圣庙不胜枚举，其数量规模远远超过了孔子的文庙。仅河南省境内，知名的就有四座。洛阳关林，许昌霸陵桥，周口南关帝庙，荥阳三义庙。众所周知，三国演义中关羽的结局是败走麦城，被东吴一个叫马忠的小喽啰所擒，不肯投降东吴而被孙权一刀斩了，后来孙权害怕刘备报复转而送头颅嫁祸曹操。然曹操在收到关羽那栩栩如生的头颅后，受到惊吓一病不起。有人就建议曹操在城外为关羽建一座庙宇，烧香驱邪。可是，这初建成的关庙不是忽然坍塌，就是被火焚烧。谋士们献策，关羽是忠义之人，定是死后不愿与他同伍，既然那么自负，不如就在关羽成名之地建造吧，于是曹操就在虎牢关为关羽建立了庙宇，果然，不日既成。古人崇拜英雄，而现代人，似乎也有着或多或少的英雄情结，它之所以可以在任何年代都牵动人心，那是因为当人们在无法战胜自然，无法战胜困难和敌人时的一种精神渴求，是一种慷慨悲壮的责任和孤独。所以最初民间所供奉的关羽并不是那位圣灵永驻，英雄盖世，能带来福气安乐的保护神。到了中期，关羽的地位与形象也再次发生了变化，一跃成为了商人们的保护神和祖师爷，比如豆腐业，相传关羽年轻时曾以贩卖豆腐为生；铁匠业，相传关羽早年以打铁为业；还有诸如理发、屠宰、刀剪，因为他们的工具都是刀，而关羽的兵器是青龙偃月刀。他们相信关羽的神力能给他们带来财富，还有一个重要原因是他的诚实守信正是行走江湖的商人们所需要的。
